my husband took enbrel for 3 years he has been off of it, really hasn't needed it in about a year, last week he had a chest e-ray for a surgery needed, his lungs are full of small malinant tumors, his lungs are FULL of individual tumors, both lungs...from Enbrel, don't be foolish and take this drug, yes it makes you feel better at the time but long term this drug is not worth it, we have a hell of...

The cost was extremely high even with insurance and the results were poor.

I saw improvement during the first 6 months, however, I was just coming out of a flare and had some improvement even before starting treatment, so I'm unsure if it is due to the drug or not. I am now experiencing slightly more pain and restriction of movement in the second 6 months, but not a complete flare-up like the last one.

After being diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis about 35 years ago, I began treatment with Cox-1 NSAIDs. The disease went into remission for ten years about 25 years ago. When it recurred in 2000, my doctor decided I had developed an allergy to Cox-1 NSAIDS and switched me to the Cox-2s until they were withdrawn from the market for safety reasons. At that point, the doctor prescribed Enbrel, which I self-injected twice a week for five years, along with taking methotrexate tablets. These drugs did a good job of keeping the pain and swelling of my arthritis in check as well as the psoriasis. However, after five years of the medication, I was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer. Arthritis is an immune disorder that kicks one's immune system into overdrive; after I originally developed arthritis, I was otherwise very healthy until I began to use Enbrel. During the period of my use of Enbrel, at least some parts of my immune system were suppresed by that drug, and it is hard not to wonder now what role Enbrel may have played in the development of my cancer. It may be wise for anyone who takes Enbrel to become knowledgeable of the symptoms of cancer, particularly any types that may have occurred elsewhere in your family tree, and make sure that your family doctor also is aware of any family history of cancer. I no longer take Enbrel. Read More Read Less

Serious Side Effects--optical neuritis--- I took Enbrel for 2 years 3 months. For the first 18 months It really helped me live again. My swelling and pain were reduced drastically. I would occasionally have a bad day and have to take some prendisone, but worked well. I started getting headaches and dizzyness that went on for probably 10 months. But it still helped me so much I was willing to live with it. My eyesight was noticeable weaker, and I started getting this pain behind my right eye...like I was being stabbed in the brain. I went to see the eye dr and I was diagnosed with optical neuritis, which is swelling of the optical nerve. If the optical nerve is damaged you go blind, so that is a big deal. I had to stop the Enbrel 3 months ago and have been miserable. The eye pain has gone away but my vision has not returned. I can barely see out of my right eye, like I can make out shapes and stuff but can't read a book if I cover my left eye. Sucks, I am 27 years old. It worked well until it ruined my eye....Great drug, terrible side effects. pick your poison carefully. Read More Read Less

I have had lupus for 18 years, but went into an extended remission about 8 years ago. Yay! I had had moderate to severe psoriasis for years on my skin that would come and go as it was treated. I suddenly developed psoriatic arthritis about a year ago that was so severe I couldn't hold a coffee cup or remote control because of pain and weakness in my hands and fingers, and pretty much every joint and bone in my body was horribly painful. Even the bottoms of my feet were so bad that I could barely walk when I got out of bed in the mornings. I took over 100 Norco a day for pain just to get by and be able to work. Once I started a combo of Enbrel and Mtx, it was like the sun came up! After about 4 months I became almost completely pain free and quit the narcotics. My skin is nearly completely clear at this point (about 1 year in) and rarely do I have a flare. It's like a miracle for me, I feel nearly normal again. So far no side effects other than a small but severe infection in a crack in my knuckle from the psoriasis that required 20 days of clindamycin, but cleared up without complications. I ope I never have to quit this drug.Read More Read Less

This drug, after taking it four years led to continuous infections for the last two and half years. Four hospital stays,in home infusion theropy with Vancomysin four times, the loss of my large toe. I am not diabetic. The unhealing of sores caused by sepsis and the unhealing sores that led to 12 casts and off loading boots of all kinds has keep me inactive all this time. This is existing not living. My immune system is shot. Please beware of this poison and the effects it has on your body and immune system.Read More Read Less

I was diagnosed at 18 and am now 24. I tried a lot of medications before Enbrel but stayed away from steriods. Getting RA at such a young age made it hard to take medication that was effective and try to start my family. My RA doctor, at the time, recommended I go off all RA medication while trying to get pregnant. I did so and within 4 months I had severe bone damage to my hands. I changed doctors, got back on methotrexate and then realized methotrexate wasn't enough. My dr added Enbrel and it has been a miracle medication for me. I stopped methotrexate and after 3 months tried to conceive and did so right away. I've remained on Enbrel with caution from my RA doc and my OBGYN. I'm now 8 months pregnant. My first pregnancy off medication ended in miscarriage at 7 weeks. I think it was because I was in SO much pain. Since I've been on Enbrel I can truly enjoy life again. It doesn't hurt to walk, go up and down stairs, I can get out of the bath tub with ease, I don't experience any morning stiffness... I really feel like a normal person again. I make my husband give me the shots because I refuse to do them myself. The shot hurts for about 15 seconds but it is SO worth it! I highly recommend this medication!Read More Read Less

This was te first drug I received to treat my RA. I had one great month. Right after the second injection, I went numb on my right side from my ribs down. It was a demyelizing event. It hasn't gone away. I am glad that this med seems to work for some people, but the risks are high. I am on a cocktail of other drug, none of which has damaged me as significantly as this drug.

I self inject with syringe once a week. Pain was reduced abut 80% after 3 weeks. Fatigue reduced only about 50%. Side effects the first month were site redness and rash. Injections were too painful on the leg. Much more comfortable on the abdomen. Mild side effects in my eyes and balance. I plan to continue for at least the 2 years my Rx insurance will cover cost of med.
