I was prescibed 10 mg dosage at 8pm to help with sleeplessness, irritable bowel syndrome, and back and neck pain. This has been a miracle drug for me! The cost is so much cheaper than the newer drugs that did not help. I would recommend trying this drug. The first few nights I was a little tired the next day, but now I feel wonderful. I can't believe it worked because I was very skeptical.

I had a major surgery in April, and about a couple of months later...I felt something painful in side my skin. Went to see the same doctor that did my surgery and explain to him about the pain and trouble sleeping. He prescribe me with this elavil meds. After I read everything about this elavil...I was in shock? Why did the doctor want me to take this meds? I did not take the medicine because I do...

I have chronic pain syndrome and insomnia. My physician has prescribed 25 mg. for sleep and pain relief because of stiff muscles, and spasms that make it hard to get the rest I needed. Taking a tablet a bedtime helps me fall asleep and if I wake during the night I go back to sleep right away. It works!

I have Fibromyalgia and the doctor just started me on Elavil 25mg. So far it seems to be working well. I have even noticed a slight increase in energy during the day.

This medicine was prescribed for insomnia to replace my Ambien. I didn't expect it to work but, from night one I started getting a natural quality sleep with no side effects.

This is a dangerous drug. I developed Trigeminal Neuralgia ten years ago, and Elavil is one of the first options for nerve pain of this sort, as well as Tegretol. It is an older Tricyclic Antidepressant, and I was given a large dose to start with, then my internist told me to 'just stop' taking it, and I became (literally) crazy. I could NOT stop perseverating. I almost lost my job. That was over 10 years ago. Previously I was on 50 ml. and I weaned down to 25, with the hope of weaning completely, because I know this drug makes me extremely anxious, confused, etc. BUT, when I stopped about a year ago, I could not stop crying. I thought it was perhaps a situational depression based on my circumstances at the time, but finally, started taking it again, and the crying immediately stopped. Recently, my pharmacy could not obtain the only generic brand of this drug I can stand in my system, so the pharmacist told me I could cut the 50 mg. I had from a previous pharmacy error in half, even though there is no mark on the pill to enable one to do so. Again, I could not stop crying. I am now taking the generic again that I do not prefer, but this horrible crying and this anxiety is too serious for me not to let others know. This is no drug to fool around with.Read More Read Less

My neurologist wanted to give me a drug that was not a painkiller, but ease my symptoms while helping me sleep. I was getting 4 hours of disturbed sleep before the medication due to vertigo, pressure in head, feeling feverish, head pain, etc. I have started with 10 mg before bed but am going up to 30 mg slowly. I drink water all day so I have not noticed a dry mouth, nor weight gain or other possible symptoms. I have however been extremely groggy. I sleep for more than 8 hours and still feel tired, and I could fall asleep if I close my eyes. The fatigue does not make my dizziness feel great, but again, sleep is greatly improved as are the headaches. Hopefully my body will adjust and then I can wean myself off so I can fall asleep naturally again. May request other form of migraine relief if the fatigue does not dissipate. Read More Read Less

In college, I worked 40 hours + per week in a supervisory role, in addition to taking a full class schedule. I started getting daily headaches that later became daily migraines, rendering me totally ineffective at everything. Imitrex made me even sicker, so my doctor prescribed Amytriptaline (Elavil). The first time I took one pill before bed (10 mg), I didn't wake up until 2:30 p.m. the next day...sleeping through both school and work while my alarm had been blaring for hours in my ear. Wow... So I learned to adjust and started taking the pill with a 9-10 hour sleep window set aside, and gradually I adjusted to it and I could sleep for a solid eight hours and get up with no problem. My life changed significantly. My migraines, and just headaches in general disappeared, and I have never had a migraine since. Also, I rarely get headaches any more. In the last ten or so years I have had a regular headache maybe four or five times. In addition, I found that with dedicated deep sleep, I was more refreshed and focused during the day, and with the "happy" effects, was more motivated to exercise and eat right. Unlike some other reports, I lost weight and felt awesome. The only side effect I experienced was the onset of having what felt like the world's smallest bladder....not sure if it does bladder damage, but after taking it I experienced some major problems with having to urinate all the time, which have gradually dissipated with time. That's my feedback, hope it helps!Read More Read Less

I was prescribed this medication to help stop my daily migraines as well as help me sleep better through the night. Overall it has helped though recently after over six months of taking this medication my migraines have come back, I go back Into the doctor office in about a week, to get a higher dose. This medication, is a narcotic so it will have the effect the next day to make you a little tired but that is because with this drug you need atleast 8 hours of sleep. Do not take any other sleep aide with this medication, no matter how in need of sleep you are in, you will feel like you have had a headache for 5 days straight.Read More Read Less

After a month on Elavil (2 of the smallest mg), I get about five hours of sleep at night, but none during the day. I'm yawning as I write this. This drug causes me to seek sleep during the daylight hours. Any ambition to be productive during the day has gone away. My former restless-leg syndrome (RLS) hasn't reappeared, which wasn't anticipated. While I'm grateful for the sleep that I get, I might try a newer drug, suggested by a 2nd doctor.

Facing hip surgery and neck pain from old injury, I needed a good nights sleep. I began to sleep well and have almost no pain all day long. Almost feeling as though my hip was no longer a problem. However the weight gain is not a problem Iam not willing to live with. A gastritis bypass patient I cannot afford to pack on pounds, 10 in a month. I will have to speak to my physician for another option. If not for the weight and itching it was nice to be pain free . Even for a little while.

I was placed on 25mg for depression and take only at night for the past 2 yrs. It works well for me -I wake up refdreshed and w/ positive thoughts fore the day. My only issue is I have episodes of talking loudly while asleep. I have conversations that actually took placed during that day. My husband states-I wake him with my conversatiins or laughing. Wwhen he tells me what I said-it mainly a conversation that I was part of during that day. Could this be caused by my 25mg nightly use?

Was given this medication to replace ambien for insomnia. The side effects are HORRIBLE! Weight gain in the first 2 weeks, severe headaches, dry mouth, aweful dreams and feeling of hangover all day. Do not recommend.
