I was prescibed 10 mg dosage at 8pm to help with sleeplessness, irritable bowel syndrome, and back and neck pain. This has been a miracle drug for me! The cost is so much cheaper than the newer drugs that did not help. I would recommend trying this drug. The first few nights I was a little tired the next day, but now I feel wonderful. I can't believe it worked because I was very skeptical.

I had a major surgery in April, and about a couple of months later...I felt something painful in side my skin. Went to see the same doctor that did my surgery and explain to him about the pain and trouble sleeping. He prescribe me with this elavil meds. After I read everything about this elavil...I was in shock? Why did the doctor want me to take this meds? I did not take the medicine because I do...

I was prescribed Elavil, 10mg/day, by my urologist as a last resort to treat chronic pelvic/groin pain (cause unknown) that has plagued me off and on for 17 years. At 10mg, it took several weeks to take effect and at the beginning I had strange dreams and daytime sleepiness. But after those first several weeks, the side effects disappeared, as did my pain. Recently, my prescription ran out and I've had a very difficult time convincing my new urologist (my old one moved away) to renew the prescription. He refuses to believe that Elavil at only 10mg/day could possibly have relieved my pain.Read More Read Less

Overall I believe it has been a positive for any potential suicidal problems. Since I take it at bedtime it has aided in a more restful sleep.

I have taken Elavil for many years, like about 20 years. I started out with a 10 mg dose and moved up slowly to 50 mg. It was prescribed for me to help me sleep through severe arthritic pain. I have taken the 50 mg dose for 3-4 years now and I will stay at that dosage. I do have problems with nightmares and I am wondering if increasing my dosage would help with that. I intend to ask my Dr. The nightmares are very disturbing to me and my husband. I am 72. I do not know what has caused me to have the mightmres and I am hoping the increase in dosage will help. It really does a wonderful job of helping me sleep through pain, and I usually go right back to sleep after waking from a nightmare, so I know it must help somewhat. Just hope a stronger does might help.Read More Read Less

I am currently taking 25mg a day for migraine prevention. since taking the drug, I have seen a big reduction in the frequency of my headaches-HOWEVER I have gained 10lbs in 5 months. Along with the weight gain I have insatiable cravings for sugar. I am going to talk to my doctor and insist on a reduction in dosage or going off of it altogether. Weight gain like that is unacceptable.

I am stopping this medicine today. I do not fall a sleep till the middle of the night and that is what it was given to me for, sleep issues. I get headaches and have no energy all day! Since I was better off before I took it, I will no longer take this drug.

I have Fibromyalgia and a life long sleep disorder. I can't fall asleep, ever. I took Remeron for years to sleep, but it stopped working. I have tried most RX and every OTC sleep med. The new classes of drugs make me very sick and what makes most people sleep, makes me feel wide awake. This works well for me and is beginning to decrease my Fibro pain. If you are like me and resistant to new insomnia drugs or SNRI's, don't be afraid to try this old school medication. It also only costs $6.00 a month...unlike many of the new meds.Read More Read Less
