This is the best option for low HDL, high cholesterol and high triglycerides if you don't want to take prescription drugs. It was far superior than Vytorin and shocked my doctor when it performed better than prescription drugs for me. My HDL went from 29 to 45.

I experienced the feeling of being extreemly cold. My feet and hands were white with cold. Internally I was so cold I thought I should be shivering, but wasn't. After taking my pill, the 7th night, my forehead became freezing cold and I got a terrible headache. After the 20th pill, taking 1 daily at midnight, I quit. That day I was unablke to get warm. My feet were white and the ends of my toes were black - I do have a circulation problem in my feet so I am very sensitive atoub their color. I have missed 2 doses, now, and my toes are back to normal, I am nolonger freezing, no headache, no nausia, no lethargy and not in bed under the electric blanket all day and night.Read More Read Less

Just took a 500mg and was looking up about it and before I could find out what could happen it was happening. The on fire and iching revews were helpful because that is how I feel all over my body. Had no idea that a reaction would be so fast.

Originally prescribed Niaspan but switched to slow release Niacin due to cost savings. Have been taking 500 mg once day, before bed for 3 months. Cholesterol dropped from 164 to 146 & Triglycerides from 385 to 227. Blood tests dates 11/21/08 & 2/9/09. By taking a 81mg aspirin 1/2 hour before taking the Niacin and eating a low fat snack with it prevented the flushing commonly associated with it. During the day a warm feeling does occur from time to time but nothing that is uncomfortable. I also take 80mg Pravastatin 1x/day Read More Read Less

I've only been on this stuff for 2 days and I don't like the flushing and itching effects. My cholesterol has been in really good shape for several years now since being controlled by Lipitor. I just started getting services provided from the VA Hospital. It was at the VA first visit that I was prescribed this stuff due to a triglyceride reading of 318. I was given 750mg tab and told to take it 30 minutes after a 81mg aspirin. I literally feel like I've gone into a tanning bed and kicked the damn thing up to high and set myself on fire. My son is a doctor and he told me it could have been avoided altogether by a regimen of good diet and exercise. I'm by no means obese but the only time I feel like running is when someone is chasing me, and so far I've not had to do that. Guess I'll go fill up the tub with ice cubes and see if that helps. If not I'll stay away from combustibles.Read More Read Less

I was told to take this for my cholesterol. My good cholesterol was too low and I was told to take this. There is a flush free niacin you can get now. I didn't want to take prescriptions for my cholesterol and was prescribed this. I was worried at first cause of the side effects but I was lucky to find it flush free. You can find it at any Wal Mart.

I started taking 1000mg after lunch at first and the inching was really bad. After talking to my doctor, he had me fo down to 500mg at bedtime after I take 4 baby aspirin 30 minutes before, and I also make sure I eat a low fat snack before taking the niacin. My dosage has now been raised to 1000mg, taking it the same way, 30 minutes before taking 4 baby aspirin and a low fat snack at bedtime. I still have some itching, but not like taking it during the day and on an empty stomach. My cholestrol was almost 500 and my triglycerides were in the 400's... I go next week to get my blood tested after being on niaspan for 6 weeks. I am praying that this is working since I can't take statins. Niaspan is my last hope to get my levels under control. I had triple bypass 10 years ago, and had 6 stents implanted this year.Read More Read Less

After taking this medication my skin was itchy and felt as if it were on fire. It even hurt to turn over in bed. That combined with night sweats made for a terrible nights sleep. I hope it gets better with use.

I started with triglicerides over 500, LDL of 171 and HDL of 29. My triglicerides are now 95, LDL is 94 and HDL is 54. The flushing has continued but I will continue as long as there are no liver complications. The results are great and would recommend this treatment as long as your doctor is consulted prior to use.
