This is the best option for low HDL, high cholesterol and high triglycerides if you don't want to take prescription drugs. It was far superior than Vytorin and shocked my doctor when it performed better than prescription drugs for me. My HDL went from 29 to 45.

I had to learn how to take this without the flushing, itching skin-on-fire. My doctor prescribed it at bedtime with an 81mg low dose aspirin. I take the aspirin a half hour before the Niaspan and I rarely get any symptoms now. But if I take it earlier in the day or without the aspirin, oh boy it's like a heat rash and it's intense. Part of me has gotten used to the flush and now it's more of a rush like "it's working." All in all I think it's a great strategy to add to an overall lipid lowering program if taken properly. I took this med at bedtime as my dr. had prescriped. I woke up about 1 hr later feeling very flushed and red all over my body. It felt like I was on fire. I also had a rash that was very itchy all over my body. I stopped this med and when I looked up the side effects, I saw that this was one of them. If you try this, I would suggest you do not take it before bed so that you will be awake if any side effects happen.

Was hoping to have triglycerides lowered but barely showed a difference, also lots of abdominal discomfort as treatment went on and bowel changes.

I started using Niaspan per my Doctor's advice. I have lowered my triglyceride level from 180 to 60 by taking 2000 mg per day.
