No one told me that I could experience dramatic weight gain taking this med. It wasn't on the paperwork that I was given when I got it. We're talking 100lbs here. Now I can't seem to lose the weight.

For me, this med was a disaster. It was prescribed for me initially by a pill pushing shrink who made a snap judgement that I was bipolar II after my wife filed for divorce and I asked for help. I had been on and off anti-depressants for years, usually after failed relationships. For me, this med was a disaster. It was prescribed for me initially by a pill pushing shrink who made a snap judgement that I was bipolar II after my wife filed for divorce and I asked for help. I had been on and off anti-depressants for years, usually after failed relationships. It made things worse, not better, and I ended up in and out of the psych ward six times over the next three years, and each time they increased the dose, finally to a staggering 900 mg per day, also prescribing high doses of Lamictal, Abilify, Effexor and Clonazepam, at which point I became a zombie and was unable to function for nearly two years. I also gained the standard 80 lbs. I'm my experience this drug and the others represent all that is wrong with "modern" psychiatry; blindly throwing questionable meds at the problem without an understanding of the underlying brain chemistry. My salvation from this nightmare came when I got fed up and started seeing a psychiatrist who had the reputation as being one of the best in the business in a large West Coast city. She carefully listened to my symptoms, my story, and after a few sessions had me tested for the MTHFR genetic mutation, which occurs in various forms in approximately 10% of the population. Turns out I had two of the mutations which keep the body from processing folic acid, a common vitamin found in many foods, into L-methylfolate, which is needed to balance the common mood regulators, such as serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine, which I am sure many of you know about if you are on this website. Her solution was to put me on Deplin, a medicinal food ( not a drug!) and wean me off Seroquel and the other drugs, which she felt were either totally useless or in the case of Seroquel did more harm than good. Within a month I started feeling much better and after four months I was weaned off all of the meds, completely symptom free This is my story only, but beware Astra Zeneca and the pill pushing incompetent shrinks.
