I had clear skin my entire life until I hit the age of 21. Suddenly I had horrible acne all over my cheeks, jawline and around the sides of my mouth (at all times, not just during period). It was so bad that I rarely left my room, and I wouldn't even let my boyfriend see me unless the lighting in the room was extremely dim. Suddenly, I stopped hanging out with friends and couldn't even bare going...

I was given this medication for adult acne, It started out fine, but my menstrual cycles became more frequent and heavy, at almost 50 years old I had them every 2 weeks, very heavy and painful. I still had some acne pop up here and there. I now stopped taking it.

I started taking a 50mg pill daily for my acne starting in December 2021. My acne was pretty mild but would increase in number around my period. My dermatologist suggested I try this out. I’ve been on it for around 9 months now and rarely ever get pimples anymore, not even during my period. I did notice slight breast swelling in the first month or so, but that seemed to go away. Other than that, no side effects. Couldn’t ask for a better experience

This medication had no effect on my skin, and I was taking it for acne. I was on it for about 3 months and noticed my mental health was completely ruined. I disassociated constantly and never felt right. I would get so lightheaded and pass out multiple times a week, something that I had never experienced before. I continued taking them for 6 months before I stopped. I have been off the meds for 4 years now and still would say my brain still has not recovered.

My Dr put me on Spironolactone for acne treatment for about 4-5 months now, due to PCOS. I’ve never had bad acne before, just your occasional pimples on face, chest and back during menstrual cycle, but that’s it. But before diagnosed with PCOS, I was getting them along my cheek bone, and back to where it left scars from picking at them(usually doesn’t happen when I pick at my pimples… yes yes, I know you’re not supposed to anyway) Sure it has helped, but the taste of the pill is by far DISGUSTING. I’m talking HORRENDOUS. The smell. side affects. All of it. Also, I have to take Vitamins to compensate hair loss. UGH. I’m constantly having an upset stomach, nauseas, and extremely tired all of the time. It’s a bit weird because I was exxxxtremely tired before finding out I had PCOS but now… it still feels quite the same. Please help!!! *insert nervous face here*Read More Read Less

Started Spironolactone about 3 years ago for symptoms of PCOS. Within the first 3 months of 100mg improvements were seen with cycle regulation, decrease in hot flashes, decrease in hair growth, no more edema of the legs. Effectiveness started decreasing by 6 months and increased dose to 200mg. I felt great! Mood improvement, more confidence, felt more like the woman I should be. Occasional breast tenderness, really blossomed for a year to a D cup, then returned to a normal fullness of a C cup. Arm pit hair was so bad that I could shave twice a day, changed to only needing to shave every 3 days. Hot flashes are very rare now. Cycle went from every 5 months to every other month. Fluid retention was painful in hands and feet, reduced to normal! I also use this medicine for hypertension, however I also take metoprolol to lower heart rate and decrease blood pressure, in conjunction with losartan to level blood pressure. Hard to say how much it helped my blood pressure with this combination. No negative side effects. Spironolactone has been the most helpful and effective medication for my hormones! Birth control pills would cause constant bleeding. Metformin made me gain weight, frequent nausea, and started becoming pre diabetic. Once I got off the metformin I lost the weight and my sugar went back to normal. Not everybody responds the same to meds. Read More Read Less

I took this for acne. The sad thing is it helped my acne. I was on a very low dose. The side effects prevented me from continuing which included, constipation, nausea, sleepiness, headache, and muscle pains.

I took this to help my high blood pressure and the dark hairs on my face. I took one 25mg pill and within a few hours my legs were aching like crazy (felt like growing pains) and I was peeing every 30mins. If you don’t care about that then try it… I can’t do it.

I started taking this medication for hair loss due to a crazy hormone imbalance. I was told it takes six months to see results. It took about five months for me, but it completely stopped the hair loss and helped to balance my hormones. I've had no side effects except for some tiredness.

started spiro on nov 17 2021, its about 3weeks now, so quite fresh experience. i have severe hirsutism on chest, belly, back and face. my testosterone rises every month from 1.4nmol to about 2.3-2.5 for ovulation and goes back to normal level(<1.7) by end of cycle. this elevation is sustained 3 out of the 5weeks every cycle for the last 20yrs or so. i have never been given any med that helped. i was put on dianette birth control, metformin, and lisinopril for my pcos. dianette i dont like it never improved my hirsutism and i dont want birth control anyway so when i was told to stop because of blood pressure i was relieved. metformin makes me very hungry so can only tolerate very small dose like 250mg/day as i have close to normal sugar level for the last two years with hba1c at 36-39mmol. otherwise its wonderful it improves blood flow to my uterus and regulate my cycle slightly. i also need to take a thyroid med for slight hypothyroid correction with tsh 3.2 and this is the one that actually makes my cycle regular and ovulate normally. i was switched to labetalol in august from lisinopril when i got pregnant and my blood pressure shot up to 160/105 and i lost the baby at 9weeks, with no known reason as it was too early to tell but i think bp had a role in it. labetalol is rubbish it made my heart slow from 70-75 to the 50s which was a weird feeling and raised the bottow bp to be over 90 consistently like 136/97. i consulted doctors for spiro and noone was willing to prescribe it to me because day 3 base bloods show testosterone is normal and they discard the elevated levels around ovulation, so i consulted a pharmacy online and get to try spiro. you can tell im desperate for a solution. i started dosing at 50mg/day for the first 3 full weeks and yesterday increased to 2x50mg after gp said my bp is still high and to increase labetalol to 300mg/day. i decided to stop labetalol completely and give spiro a chance for bp purposes next to the hirsutism. after just a day of the revision, my bp is around 120/76 but i feel a bit dizzy from the sudden drop. i wont stop because i am happy it started working! its like a 2 in 1 for me, hopefully i will see result for my hirsutism too. it also helps to have less meds as no labetalol is necessary and no lisinopril as spiro cant be taken with ace type inhibitors like lisinopril.Read More Read Less

I have been on 25 mg for a month for high blood pressure. I am also a vegetarian. I work several jobs, which can be stressful. The first week I had diarrhea for two days, and experience daily drowsiness, stopped the med for a couple of days and started back after being told to get back on it. Blood pressure had also gone back up. I continue to have drowsiness, its worst then ever. When I eat i fall asleep, I nod while driving, because I'm a vegetarian there are certain vegetables and fruits I cannot eat while on this med. My blood sugar has been dropping low at night, my blood pressure has dropped very low and causes chest burning. I skipped one day and had alful heart papitations. that night, however that one day I had a great day, I wasn't sleepy no chest burning. I took the medication the next day because of the papitations and elevated blood pressure. Tonight my pressue is low, my chest burns feels, Im yawning excessfully proably because of my low blood pressue. I have got to get off this medication. It lowers everything and makes me feel horrible.Read More Read Less

This medicine worked well for me with eliminating water retention. My thinning hair got thicker again but experienced some overall itching. After my refill I started getting headaches and told my pharmacist. He informed me it could be the brand because of additives some companies use. I went back to more expensive brand instead of generic and the headaches stopped. I stopped taking for a while because of concerns about the minor itching. I have today started taking again because of the benefits that I got with my hair, mood and overall feeling better.Read More Read Less

Please do not use this drug to defeat acne. I had an awful experience with this drug. Some of the effects included extreme anxiety, paranoia, and depersonalization. I am 23 years old and deal with some anxiety from time to time. This drug exasperated my anxiety and further complicated my mental health. I even became very flushed in the face after an hour of taking the medication each day and also found it increased my acne. I used spironolactone (50mg) for about a month and a half and stopped using it about a month ago. It took some time for my anxiety to decrease, and I finally feel like I am getting back to my usual self. I advise you to consider using a different method to combat acne, so you can avoid the potential of what I experienced. Read More Read Less

I believe every woman who's suffering from hormonal acne should definitely give this a try. It's cheap, easy to use and best of all it works. After my teenage years my acne never went away. Antibiotics and retinin A were both expensive and it didn't solve my issue. I wanted something that prevent breakouts. I tried a few birth controls but it didn't make a difference. In August 2020 I had another dematologist appt and was researching treatments and I came across "spironolactone". I have never heard of it before then but boy was I ever glad to. It was exactly what I was looking for. Spironolactone lowers testosterone which spikes in women a week before having a period which give us that acne flares. I started off 25 mg twice daily for 6 weeks and then 50 mg for another 6 weeks. I saw no change in 25 mg and in 50mg I saw a slight improvement. I've been on 100mg for 8 months now and my skin looks better than it has in a long time. I still get the occasional zit but I chalk that up to maskne and it's so minisculue than what I had before. I also noticed my leg hair is slower to grow, a bonus for me. Before I would shave every other day now it's once a week. My mood has change for the better too. I feel less irritable and moody now. My only con is that I need to pee more often. If you're new on spironolactone just know it might take a few months before you get results you want with some purging in every increase in dose. Just stick it out you'll thank yourself later. I know I did.Read More Read Less

I am 22 years old and have had cystic acne on my chin area for the past 10 years. After trying many topical/over the counter treatments with no resolve, I was finally consulted to a dermatologist. She started me on Spironolactone 50mg twice a day. Before this pill I would have 2-6 very inflamed white heads on my chin area and 1-2 cysts under the skin at all times. I started taking Spironolactone in November 2020. During the first 2 months I had a "purging" phase, but at the 2 month mark, my skin had started to clear up significantly. From then on, I have had very little breakouts, maybe 3-4 white heads in a months period (which I partly blamed on wearing a mask), and no cysts. March 2021 I asked my derm if I could bump up my dose to see if I could achieve 100% clear skin. After a month of taking 100mg in the morning and 50mg at bedtime, my skin is the clearest it has ever been. I still get the occasional tiny white head (which I again blame on my job/mask) which goes away quickly with the use of hydrocolloid acne patches! This medication is mainly prescribed to treat high blood pressure, so some people may feel dizzy or light headed when taking it, and might have to pee more, I personally never noticed these side effects. This is also not a fast solution to acne, it can take months to get to clear skin. For me, it has taken approx 6 months to get to this point.Read More Read Less
