After multiple courses of antibiotic treatments, and a suggestion that I go on acutane, I found a wonderful dermatologist who prescribed aldactone for my hormonal acne. He explained that the drug binds to the receptors on my oil glands, blocking the hormones from binding there and activating them. My skin has been clear for several years now. It's been necessary to increase the dosage over time, b...

I am writing this for my girlfriend of 10 years who started taking this drug about 3 weeks ago. Over the last four days her behavior has become nothing short of psychotic. She has attacked me physically, she is convinced I am having multiple affairs and she cries hysterically. And she completely denies that this drug has anything to do with her behavior change. What the heck should I do?

This Spironolactone(Aldactone) drug actually does exactly what the doctor said it would do. He told me that due to my 6 Heart Attacks at age 35 followed by 3 Pulmonary Embolisms at age 42, I needed to be placed on diuretics as well as many other medications. This medication was one of his choices because I was having tons of SEVERE cramps in all the muscles in my entire body which were quite debilitating. This medicine he said would not only reduce the amount of fluid in my body but would also elevate my Potassium level. I was also placed on a Potassium supplement (Klor-Con). Over a period of time (and I do mean about 12 to 18 months or more) the cramps lessened to just a couple times a year. The one thing he did NOT tell me however and I had to figure out for myself was that the Spironolactone stripped my body (I am a male) of ALL my body hair except the hair on my hair and Pubic Hair!! All the hair on my legs, arms, arm-pits, and even my face stopped growing and began to fall out and was not replaced! After I figured this out, I made sure to have him remove this medicine from my regimen, which he did, and my hair began to return within just a few weeks and within a few months it was almost fully restored.Read More Read Less

I've been taking this for the treatment of my acne. It got rid of almost all of it. I'm very pleased with it. The only side effect that I had was that I went up 2 bra cup sizes.

This is the second time in several years I’ve been put on spironolactone, 25 mg X2 /day. It does bring my BP down, but it is giving me extreme back pain in the kidney area. Also I feel dizzy and ankles swell. When I get off of it my back pain goes away, has anyone else experienced this?

I have been taking this med for about 2.5 months. My blood pressure is now excellent and I am only taking half the prescribed amount. I haven't noticed any less hair growth, it's about the same. What I have noticed is severe pain in both of my knees. It took me awhile to suspect this med, I went through a process of elimination. Some days I can hardly walk down the stairs or do normal activities. Don't know if this side effect is worth it, may have to stop because of the pain.

I am 21 years old and dermatologist has prescribed this medication to me for acne. I've only taken it for a month but I've seen results. My doctor prescribed this medication before I try Accutane. I have been suffereing from acne since I was 14 and I've tryed many OTC treatments and also oral and topical treatment prescribed by the doctor. I've noticed that the bigger ones have dissipated. Since taking this medication I've had slight cramping in one of my legs, shortness of breath and fatigue. Nothing too major. If this continues to work then I won't end up using accutane. I hope this comment helps some. This medicine isn't usually prescribed for what I'm using it for.Read More Read Less

In general I have been happy with this drug. However, just recently after increasing my dosage, I have experienced very bad leg cramping at night. Once I get up and move around, the cramping goes away.

Since being on this med, I have experienced leg and feet pain. Having problem sleeping at night because of the pain. Has anyone else experienced this problem? It has lowered blood pressure, but the pain is getting to be a problem.

When I first started taking this med. it was awful. It must have been the drug company but it smelled and tasted like skunk. I recently switched to a different store and it now smells/tastes like breath mints. I take it for hirsutism, and it started working soon after. However I have now been on this constantly for six months and I still have to shave almost daily.

I have had uncontrollable muscle spasms throughtout my entire body enough to look like i am having convulsions! Extreme swelling in face and legs, insomnia, extreme fatigue and weakness. The list goes on and on however my doctors refuse to prescrib anything else due to it stripping me of potassium when i take anything different.I would warn anyone who has Hypokylemia away from this drug if you have problems with water retension as well!!!

I developed side effects after taking just two doses of this medication. I developed a very strong pain (muscle spasm) in my hip, buttocks and thigh. I also had nausea and vomiting which lasted one day. But the pain (muscle spasms) subsided (but did not go away) very slowly over the course of two weeks. Now after two weeks of not taking the blood pressure medication, I still have a problem with some pain and numbness in my thigh muscle. I have been prescribed a muscle relaxer and an anti-inflammatory medication but the side effects persist. I will need to follow up again with my doctor because these side effects will not go away. I would never take this medication again and urge others to question their doctors about another blood pressure medication if you need one. Read More Read Less

I was prescribed this medication 10 days ago and since then, I have had shortness of breath, decreased lung capacity, and severe diarrhea. I can't lay down in bed because it feels like I'm underwater. This was prescribed by my doctor in addition to Lotrel 10/40. I felt better without taking it when I did stop for a day, and when I began to take the regular dosage 2x a day, there was no sleep for me and extreme shortness of breath, swelling, and shear panic that I was having a heart attack. I do not recommend this medication if you are already on something else for HBP. I see my doctor this morning and I am taking this medication back to him.Read More Read Less
