HSV2 for over 41 yrs. Get this: when discovered my Primary Care doc said the only treatment is painting the affected area with yellow dye and exposing it to lightbulb... boy have things gotten better. He did correctly state I have it for life. I began using acyclovir less than 2 yrs ago (3 pills every day for 7 days from initial outbreak symptoms) and I continued to get monthly outbreaks.. which ...

I was having the same cold sore for 3 consecutive months around my menstrual cycle period. I was prescribed Valacyclovir 1g/day for six months. The cold sore got better few days later however i could not tolerate the side effects. I got severe join pains in both my hands and i called several doctors to ask them if it was related to this medication. All of them assured me that it had nothing to do with it until i went to an arthritis doctor thinking that i had arthritis i could literally not use my hands to carry a bottle of water - that painful!!! I stopped the medication and in two days my hands got better! I also got shortness of breath, and a red spot on my neck...which made me throw the box away! If you begin to have weird symptoms, do not hesitate just stop the medication!!!Read More Read Less

I have had cold sores since the age of 12. I was never told by my Doctor that when contagious it could spread to other parts of my body. I touched my lip and then touched a 'feminine hygiene product' only to move the infection to my genitals. This is now an 'issue' for me. A cold sore when dating is something that can be dealt with, however trying to explain to a new sexual partner that you have the cold sore virus on your genitals can be very difficult. Valtrex has been an amazing drug therapy for me. I take it everyday and after the first outbreak on my genitals I have never had another occurrence. I still get a cold sore about once every 2 years, however never had it again on my genitals. Read More Read Less

I was shocked when I found out I had genital herpes since I could not explain how I got it. After testing I was told it was Herpes Simplex 1 which is actually very common. Although it doesn't usually cause outbreaks on the genitals, it certainly can (without sex). My first outbreak was terrible because I didn't know what I had for three days into it and I also had strep throat and a Urinary Tract Infection. I was prescribed Valtrex and everything was immediately better. I just had my second outbreak and when it started I was terrified! So I immediately started taking Valtrex and I was happily surprised to find that the outbreak completely healed before getting anywhere near to the ugly and painful stage it did the first time. The second time around was so much easier to get through because I took Valtrex from the first day of the outbreak.Read More Read Less

I was prescribed Valtrex for shingles that were on my arm and hand. The Valtrex did clear up my red blister rash, it did not do anything for my pain. I had horrible side effects from the medication. I couldn't walk down the stairs at work. I felt like I was in a constant fog and very loopy. I was not myself, very tired, could not think of words to carry on conversations. I went to my Dr. to see if it was the combination of drugs I was prescribed for shingles. I was taken off my anti seizure med but left on Valtrex and had side effects that then effected my Central Nervous System. Dizzy, wobbly, twitches and uncontrollable jerky and body movements. For me the side effects were scary. I have been off the medicine for 4 days now and I'm starting to feel myself again. Read More Read Less

I have only recently started Valtrex for use when I feel an outbreak coming on (I keep 2 in my purse at all times). I find it reduces the severity of the outbreak, but unfortunately it didn't entirely prevent said outbreak. But it wasn't as inflamed, and the healing time has been reduced by a lot! I've also started Hyland's Cold Sores and Fever Blisters, but initially was only on Valtrex (along with topical treatments).

Was diagnosed with my first bout of shingles 5 days ago and prescribed Valtrex. It began working immediately in terms of halting the rash on my face and right side of my back. I have had some side effects: cramps, slight nausea, slight headache and tiredness, but this is dissipating as the days go on.

This is my first episode with shingles per se. I have dealt with cold sores since I was a child so it is interesting to see that Valtrex is a treatment for those as well. I have been on Valtrex for 4 days and the pain and itching is subsiding. My outbreak is in my cleavage, right side and right mid back. The angry redness around the blisters is diminishing and the blisters are just little bumps. My doctor also prescribed a lotion to help dry out the rash and ease the itching. With regard to side effects, I have diarrhea, lethargic, difficulty focusing (mentally) and what I call "mush brain" - forgetful, kind of loopy, etc. One thing I noticed is that as I work on my computer, I am trying to type a word and I type a totally different word. It's like my brain is not getting all of the right pathways firing to hit the right combination of keys. I am taking 1 gram every 8 hours and generally feel a great deal of relief from the pain, although every once in awhile I will feel like someone is stabbing me in the side! Very pleased despite the side effects. Just hope my boss understands my mush brain!Read More Read Less

use it daily when I am in a relationship. Have never noticed any side effects. I can go over a year without an outbreak, and I do what I can to prevent transmitting.

I've been on Valtrex for about 24 hours and it has helped with my rash a lot but not so much with the pain. I've been using pain pills from a back problem to control the pain since the doctor didn't prescribe anything. Valtrex has made me feel very spacey and out of it. I've had no appetite and felt very nauseated. I'm trying to decide if the benefits are going to outweigh the side effects, which are pretty awful. The rash is on my left side where my bra sits and is very irritating. Maybe I'll just cut back the dose from 3 to 2 pills a day and see if that helps. Read More Read Less

Has had it for over 15years. I does get better with time(less outbreaks). Only take generic when I feel an outbreak coming on. Did use name brand in the beginning, but my insurance will make me pay more, now that there's a generic version. The generic version doesn't work as fast but I find that taking hot baths or just a hot towel or hot cotton ball directly on sore will ease the pain and itch. I am a stress free individual and this also keeps me from getting outbreaks..

I experienced my first cold sore ever. On Sunday I woke up a cluster of small blisters on my upper lip. Monday I went to the doctor and he prescribed the Valtrex. 2 grams twice per day. I took the first dose right away when I got home and noticed the blisters had flattened after a few hours. I took the second dose before I went to bed and woke up periodically to check and see how the cold sore was doing. Most of the blisters had disappeared by morning and just a bump was left. It still hurts a little, but I went into work and no one could even tell. They had to look up close to notice anything. I am hoping in the next couple days it will clear up completely. I just posted the same review at herpessupport.net. The valtrex works extremely well. I figured out that once I find more than three blisters to call before it gets out of control, to the doctor for a refill. Side effects: Headache, nausea, heart burn, nightmares

I should have taken this much sooner. I had shingles about 8 yrs ago and took it. Last year I fell down the stairs and starte having nerve pain, and icy cold feeling in nerves. It lasted and progressed for months. My Doctor took a wait and see approach. Finally I got one blister. I thought it was a bite for a few days. Then I went back to Dr. Was put on Valacyclovir. What a relief. Worked excellent. However slowly the pain and symptoms have come back in my nerves.
