HSV2 for over 41 yrs. Get this: when discovered my Primary Care doc said the only treatment is painting the affected area with yellow dye and exposing it to lightbulb... boy have things gotten better. He did correctly state I have it for life. I began using acyclovir less than 2 yrs ago (3 pills every day for 7 days from initial outbreak symptoms) and I continued to get monthly outbreaks.. which ...

After two days lower back pain kicked in. Could not bear it. Will substitute outbreaks for pills.

As soon as my skin starts to itch and I look in the mirror, it's red in the spot where the cold sores start with some white that is the cold sore starting in the skin surface. I take two Valtrex at that point and one hour later: no itching. No redness. NO COLD SORE. This is the most AMAZING drug. I have taken it too late - with bumps already surfaced - and even if they have started a whole colony of bumps already, the Valtrex gets to them somehow and they never fully form. They are stopped in their course when I take two then one later on and one at night that day. when I have been VERY late, then STILL they do not last weeks like before (also use a topical like abreva to dry them out). CONCLUSION: 1. ALWAYS carry two (1000mg x 2)in your purse / wallet. 2. DONT DOUBT when you have a feeling that they are there. 3. WATCH as they disappear. 4. CONSIDER using the BRAND name only - talk with your doctor, your insurance company, whoever to get Valtrex "DAW" or dispensed as written. For some the generic are good but for me I HAD to keep with the brand. I LOVE VALTREX!!!! PAY FOR IT. GET DONATIONS IF YOU CANNOT. IT IS A MUST HAVE. NO KIDDING. There was nothing before this drug.Read More Read Less

I am a RN & had an outbreak of shingles when I turned 60. I went on Valtrex w/in 48 hrs., & it worked like a charm! I am now 63 yrs of age & have had further shingle outbreaks; my dermatologist recommended taking 1 tablet daily of Valtrex-once again, the med has been very effective One neg. side effect is an occasional diarrheal bout (ugh), but other than that, Valtrex is without serious side effects and I'd highly suggest taking, w/ your doctor's permission.

Probably 7 or 8 times out of 10 if I take this drug at the onset of symptoms it works wonders. Either the cold sore doesn't appear or it stops at a tiny sore that has little pain, discomfort, or unsightliness. Those other times it doesn't seem to do anything at all. So it's not a cure but I'm very satisfied with the results as compared to taking nothing.

Went to doctor right away. So glad I did. Blisters all around my left ear, behind it, and down my neck. This med worked right away. No side affects. So thankful for this med. Drying up nicely. Still some pain and burning, but better now. Only been on the meds for 3 days.

I have gotten cold sores since I was very little. I am 28 now and I am under alot of stress being a single mother of 2 and life it self. For the past 2 months I have gotten at least 5 cold sores. On Wednesday I started feeling one coming on, so I took 2 500mg of valacyclovir and when I woke up yesterday morning I had the biggest blister on my lip. It look gross! So I took 2 more and took 2000mg of L-Lysine. Then in the afternoon my doctor gave me Valacyclovir 1gm. So, when I got the medication I took one and 2000mg more of the L-lysine. Then when I went to bed lastnight I took 2 1gm Vavacyclovir annd applied abreva before I went to bed. It is now 3:30pm and it is gone. All I have is dry lips. Read More Read Less

If I can take a Valtrex pill immediately upon feeling an outbreak - I can minimize the blister and swelling. I try to keep a few tablets in my car and briefcase. However, If i wake up w. a bump on my lip - or I do not take a pill for 20 minutes....It is too late. ALSO - I have noticed that since taking Valtrex - I have had many, many more outbreaks. So the duration is certainly reduced - but the frequency is 5 times more. ( used to go 12-18 months at times...now - I go through a presecription about every 2 months.)Read More Read Less

I broke out with herpes 1 for the first time about a month ago, and I was prescribed Valtrex. It was 2 pills a day for 14 days I believe? By day 7 I saw improvement and soreness went down a great deal. By day 14 all the sores were completely gone. About 2 days ago I broke out again, just as bad.. I'm now on day 2 of Valacyclovir HCL. I think you just need to keep trying different medications until you find the one that works for your body.

Starting at a young age I was getting reoccurring HSV1 sores in random areas on my face. Every few months I would get an outbreak on my face that was so swollen and painful I didn't want to leave the house. About 2 years ago my entire face; cheeks, nose, and forehead broken out. I was devastated! I went to my doctor and he was very worried about my eyes since the blisters were so close. HSV1 can cause blindness. After prescribing Valtrex, and taking one 500 mg tablet a day, I have been outbreak/side effect free. I thank God and my doctor for this drug. It has done wonders.Read More Read Less

I have had herpes on my lower back since 2007,after not being sexual active for 15 years. I was given valtrex 500mg, for 3 days and it seemed to control it till recently. Now, a couple of days after my dosage it starts again. Valtrex is being taken on a regular basis and is causing side efects of abdominal pain, extremely high blood pressure, bruising, pinpoint blood marks, stress, and hair loss. Help

I have to add that using L-lysine (no prescription required-sold in vitamin section of all drug stores 1000mg daily) has really helped me as well... with genital and oral sores. Breakouts are less frequent and less severe. This may be crazy to some-- but all of you know how awful this virus is.. and at the time of an outbreak you will do just about anything to help heal it. Well.. I have, and l-lysine is effective. i also use cornstarch.. dab a cotton ball in corstarch and apply to blister. it helps dry it out and keep any weeping from spreading to other areas. Good luck to you all...Read More Read Less

I have shingles and have been on the medicine for 4 days. I have been experiencing extremes joint pain, confusion, and I am unsteady when I walk. The plus side is my shingles is clearing up quickly. The side effects are nothing compared to the pain of the shingles, which is on my neck, ears, and inside of my ears.

I contracted genital herpes about 35 years ago and had regular outbreaks for several years. Then I didn't have an outbreak for c.30 years. From out of the blue it came back with a vengeance and I was having outbreaks c. every few months. I was prescribed 500 mil. of the Valtrex generic once a day. Since then I had been herpes-free for 10 months. I have now started an outbreak. The dr. said when I sensed an outbreak coming on, I could take 4 a day (2000 mil.). Has anyone else been given this advice from your dr. and taken 4 a day during an outbreak? PS: The 500 mil. a day causes me no side effects.Read More Read Less
