I have been on Omeprazole for 6 years. When symptoms of fatigue, serious leg pain, headaches, constant burping, gas and feeling like I had to throw up started happening, I went to my doctor of 27 years, explained what was happening and was met with silence. I have had to do research on my own; that's why I'm here. My latest blood work shows that for the first time in my life, I am Vit. D deficient...

I increased my dosage of Omeprazole from 20MG to 40MG a few years back. It's a very effective medication in terms of controlling GERD. However the issue I've been having with it is that it causes a noticeable degree of fatigue and it has lowered both my Vitamin D and Vitamin B-12 levels. I am currently taking supplements to increase my levels of those vitamins

The drug is VERY effective. When I had trouble swallowing I would open the capsule and swallow the contents whole. The drug was equally effective when taken this way.

This medication has not been good for me at all. Causes me to have constipation, low iron absorption, doesn't even controll the heart burn I have, no matter what I eat or drink and how many pills I take to releave my heartburn.

I have to take extra fiber to avoid constipation which seems to be the only side effect.

I was on this medication for several weeks. At first it didn't help at all, so my doctor doubled my dosage. Within days, my original heartburn was gone, but I had a constant lump in the back of my throat and extremely severe dry mouth. It all came apart when my sinuses completely backed up and started draining into my jaw because my passages were so dried out that it had nowhere else to go. The next day I took the Omeprazole. Within 30 minutes I had a rash and the lump in the back of my throat felt like it was going to choke me. It occured to me (finally!) that it was actually the drug causing all of this. So, I stopped taking the drug that day. Problem solved. Three days later I was in an emergency room having an acute allergic reaction to said drug. Drugs like this one have something called a half-life and they stay in your system. The longer you are on them, the longer they stay in your system after you've stopped taking them. The problem with this is that as long as they're in your system, you are will contine to react to them. Even as I write this, I am no longer on heartburn medication at all, instead I'm on Benadryl every 8 hours, predisone to stop the swelling of my throat and esophogus and pepcid to block histimines because this drug is going to be in my system for at least another 3 days. I would just have to say be very careful taking this one, it sneaks up on you and tell you're doctor if you have ANY problems because the longer you're on it, the longer you're problems going to last.Read More Read Less
