Forty-eight-year-old Maureen Marinelli's work keeps her on the go, but she'd neglected her diet and exercise until a blood test found she had something called pre-diabetes.
I wasn't too surprised because I do have two uncles that have diabetes.
Millions of americans have pre-diabetes - higher than normal blood sugar levels *not* high enough to be called diabetes. They can develop type two diabetes within a decade unless they adopt a healthier lifestyle.
Having pre-diabetes is a wake-up call. It doesn't necessarily mean that a person is going to develop diabetes because there are many things that can be done to actually decrease the risk of developing diabetes.
The nationwide diabetes prevention program study showed modest lifestyle changes can delay and even prevent type two diabetes.
We're talking for most people, 10 to 15 pounds of weight loss that can be sustained over a long period of time and a half an hour of moderate intensity exercise, such as brisk walking each day will reduce the risk by 58 percent. Now that's a big reduction in risk
Maureen changed her ways and lost about seven-percent of her body weight. Her blood sugar level improved dramatically.
It was totally surprising that only small changes, the small weight change, made such a huge difference in the medical results from the study. We were all, we were all shocked.
Maureen's kept up her new habits - encouraged that they can help her feel great and deliver her from diabetes. For WebMD, I'm Sandee LaMotte.
