Each year, more than a million Americans are diagnosed with type-2 diabetes. Now, researchers are using virtual patients to help cut the time and costs of developing new and improved treatments.
It’s estimated right now that to develop a blockbuster drug for diabetes requires about 15-years and costs 800-million dollars.
With the help of a super-computer that can perform roughly half-a-trillion calculations per second, researchers are running high-speed studies called bio-simulations. They speed the testing of experimental diabetes therapies.
We can shave 2-to-3 years off the development time and save an estimated 2-to-3-hundred-million dollars.
Researchers start out by creating a digital model of a healthy patient. From there, they can simulate different ways diabetes affects the body.
Once we've successfully reproduced the diabetes condition, then we employ new and novel therapies into these virtual patients to see how these treatments affect the, the condition.
And the results could bring better treatments to patients in less time…and at a lower cost. For WebMD, I’m Sandee LaMotte.
