What is Trogarzo used for?

Trogarzo (ibalizumab) is commonly used for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) infection.

Trogarzo may also be used for other conditions as determined by your healthcare provider.

How does Trogarzo work (mechanism of action)?

Trogarzo works by preventing HIV from infecting certain immune cells in your body called CD4-positive T cells. Thus, the amount of HIV in your body falls, which helps to control HIV infection.

How is Trogarzo supplied (dosage forms)?

Trogarzo is available in an injectable form.

How should I store Trogarzo?

Trogarzo is usually given by a healthcare provider in a hospital or clinic. If you will store Trogarzo at home, follow the instructions given by your healthcare provider.

What are the most common side effects of Trogarzo?

The most common side effects of Trogarzo are listed below. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any of these side effects that bother you.

  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Rash

What are the serious side effects of Trogarzo?

While less common, the most serious side effects of Trogarzo are described below, along with what to do if they happen.

Severe Allergic Reactions. Trogarzo can cause allergic reactions, which can be serious. Stop using Trogarzo and get help right away if you have any of the following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction

  • Breathing problems or wheezing
  • Racing heart
  • Chest pain or tightness
  • Trouble swallowing or throat tightness
  • Itching, skin rash, or pale red bumps on the skin called hives
  • Dizziness, feeling lightheaded, or fainting
  • Stomach cramps
  • Cough
  • Hot flushes
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat

Immune System Changes. When you start Trogarzo, your immune system might get stronger and start fighting infections that have been hiding inside your body for a long time. The type of symptoms you may have will depend on the infection. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you notice any of the following new symptoms of infection. 

  • Fever, sweats, chills, or muscle aches
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Vision problems
  • Confusion, problems talking, or headache
  • Skin problems such as a painful rash or warts
  • Cough or coughing up blood
  • Weakness or coordination problems 

Warnings & Precautions

Who should not use Trogarzo?

Allergies to Ingredients. People who are allergic to any of the following should not use Trogarzo.

  • Trogarzo
  • ibalizumab-uiyk
  • Any of the ingredients in the specific product dispensed

What should I know about Trogarzo before using it?

Do not use Trogarzo unless it has been prescribed to you by a healthcare provider. Use it as prescribed.

Do not share Trogarzo with other people, even if they have the same condition as you. It may harm them.

Keep Trogarzo out of the reach of children.

Trogarzo can affect your alertness or coordination. Do not drive or do other activities that require alertness or coordination until you know how Trogarzo affects you.

What should I tell my healthcare provider before using Trogarzo?

Tell your healthcare provider about all of your health conditions and any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using. This will help them determine if Trogarzo is right for you.

In particular, make sure that you discuss any of the following.

Pregnancy. It is not known if or how Trogarzo could affect pregnancy or harm an unborn baby. Tell your healthcare provider if you are or plan to become pregnant. Your healthcare provider will advise you if you should use Trogarzo while you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant. The Antiretroviral Pregnancy Registry collects safety information about the use of antiretrovirals during pregnancy. Tell your healthcare provider if you are interested in participating.

Breastfeeding. You should not breastfeed if you have human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) because of the risk of passing it to your baby. It is not known if Trogarzo passes into breast milk. Tell your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.

There are no known interactions between Trogarzo and foods or drinks.

It is unknown if drinking alcohol will affect Trogarzo. The risk of dizziness may be increased if you drink alcohol while taking Trogarzo.

Overdose/Missed Dose

What should I do if I accidentally use too much Trogarzo?

If you or someone else has used too much Trogarzo, get medical help right away, call 911, or contact a Poison Control center at 800-222-1222.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Trogarzo?

Missing doses of Trogarzo can cause it to not work as well over time. So it’s important not to miss or skip doses. If you miss an appointment to get your Trogarzo dose, call to make another appointment as soon as possible. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you stop Trogarzo or any other medicine for HIV.
