Been on Nexium for 6 years. Works good for reflux. Can't stop taking it or symptom's return worse than before. They say it is only an 8 to 12 week treatment. They lied. I was also diagnosed with severe vitamin B12 deficency. I was getting muscle cramps, tingling and numbness in my hands and feet. They never did a study on long term use of PPI's, but they are now warning people about the vitamin de...

After 3 years of using. I develop Osteoporosis. Bcoz it stop producing acid then calcium production is impede. Acid is important in calcium production which important for strong bones. I stop taking it instead I drink a glass of water at bedtime and each time I get acid reflux/heartburn.

Most excellent! I tried several different rx's to help with my acid problem and none were as effective as Nexium. After being on it for 3 months I stopped because that was how long my doc thought it would take to heal me. I stopped taking it and boom, the pain was back. Got back on Nexium and am staying on it. Such relief was unexpected.

Nexium has worked for me, but it is the side-effects that I can't handle. I went from severe putrid gas, stomach bloating, stomach cramps and diarrhea to constipation, bloating, retaining fluid and now low libido. My surgeon prescribed Zantac but it is not as effective as Nexium. Try that without success went back to the Nexium and now "break-through" heartburn.

Nexium was good for reducing the acid that went into my throat. However, I had depression issues that I didn't have before. Anxiety, muscle cramps, nervousness, and menstrual problems, weight loss and I am small as it is. Trying to get off. Hoping not to be too sick.

Was prescribed by my PCM who told me that serious side effects were uncommon and that, in fact, my chances of getting diarrhea were less than "one in a hundred". Well, I was that "one"! It was so bad that I quit taking the Nexium after two days but, managed to "keep" the diarrhea for 21 straight days (before I could see my PCM again). I then received a prescription for Protonix which was not a covered "formularly" for my insurance. So they gave me a prescription for the generic (pantoprazole) instead. After about a year, I do very well on the generic about 19 days out of 20. The odd day I don't do so well (with the GERD) I attribute to the QC of the manufacturing facility although this "judgment call",on my part, may not be correct, as other factors may be more relevant. i used this med because my upper stomach hurt and had frequent heartburn but after the first day I had diarrhea and then started getting extreme bloating of stomach (very uncomfortable) and on 5th day of use I started feeling very tired. I came home after work half day and pretty much passed out and slept for 5 hours. I decided to check out other reviews and now that my suspicions are confirmed I will discontinue its usage.

I have been taking Nexium for about 2 years. It works well as long as I take it daily - about an hour before my first meal of the day. If I try to skip a day the heartburn returns, but it has never been very bad - even before I began taking Nexium. I have used Ranitidine and some other meds, but none seem to work as well. I have noticed two possible side effects: dry mouth & lips, and inflation in the corners of my lips, almost like tiny sores. Sometimes it seems like it takes a lot longer for my food to digest - as though it just sits in my stomach. I, too, am concerned about the long-term effects of using Nexium. I was able to decrease the dosage from 40 to 20 mg. with the same results, but I've read that PPIs may make it more difficult for the body to absorb calcium, leading to osteoporosis & fractures. It may also affect vitamin B12 levels, & the effectiveness of Pepsin in the stomach to digest protein. One article mentioned that "bacteria are more likely to proliferate in the less acidic environment caused by PPIs,", which could led to a case of pneumonia.Read More Read Less

My GI doc Rx Nexium for Gerds when it first came out and I took it until six months ago. Eight years ago I developed a B12 deficiency, suggested to my doctor that I might have this condition, due to a malabsorbtion syndrome due to the Nexium, he poo poo it. Then I developed a vitamin D deficiency, same story. My bones thinned out, every two years they were thinner on bone density testing, NEXIUM! Then it finally came out in the literature that all this was true. While on Nexium, I had parotid gland swelling and pain. Facial swelling is a "huge" problem also. I experienced agitation and depression while on Nexium. My doc denied that Nexium could be a factor, now we know better. Nexium quit working for acid reflux and Tums gave better relief. Nexium's only saving grace is that it can heal esophageal erosion for me.Read More Read Less

Have been on this drug for at least ten yrs. Have many of the side effects. Worst one is low magnesium with the accompanying leg and hand cramps. Mag so low must take mag IV once a week. Been doing that for almost a year now. Doctor after doctor told me they didn't know why mag was so low, mine is usually 1.2 and normal range is 1.8 to 2.4. When all this started a year ago I was hospitalized with a 0.3 level. Finally found a doctor that told me log term use of nexium has kept my body from absorbing the mag. I also have GERD, hiatel hernia, and barretts esphogus. Have tried not taking nexium and my life was miserable. Can't live without it. Yes very expensive and had to fight to get insurance to pay for it. Have just learned to live with side effects. They are still better than how I feel when I don't take my nexium. I take 40mg daily and sometimes have to take another in the evening.Read More Read Less

My relief from stomach and esophageal pain was accomplished with Nexium, but I had no idea I'd be on it for thirty years! At age 45 I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis with NO idea it could be caused by the Nexium. Now, 20 years later, my hips are non-functioning without extreme pain. IF I HAD KNOWN of the long range side effect, I would have asked my doctor to replace Nexium with something different. WITHOUT Nexium, the burning gets severe, so it seems as if I have a rebound effect when I try to stop it. So, it's a catch 22. Can't live without it, can't walk now because of it.Read More Read Less

I just want to say that many of the symptoms I am seeing people post about on here are menopause related. Go look at the 36 menopause symptoms first before blaming the nexium. But I will agree .. I took it for 3 months without fail every single day. the second I went off it the acid, gas and bloating are through the roof again .. I thought I was just taking it to fix my eroded esophagus ,, now I feel like I cant live without it and I have to build it back up again to get any relief. I guess menopause has turned my stomach into an acid pit.. I guess I could radically alter my diet and not enjoy food anymore or take the pill.. Read More Read Less

I have a small Hiatal Hernia first found 20 years ago. Over that time acid reflux has flaired up more and more often. I took Nexium as needed the last few years. Usually in a week or two I felt better and went off it. I've had a bad episode recently. I have used it for over a month now and am not sure if I still have the reflux or side effects. I belch a lot and have stomach pains regularly. I get chest pains but I'm not sure if it is reflux or a side effect. I am looking into a new procedure called the Linx implant. Search the web. I think you will like what you learn.Read More Read Less

I took Nexium for 3 months because my prescription insurance would not cover my previous medicine for the symptoms. Rapid heartbeat at the onset. Saw cardiologist - nothing wrong with my heart. I NEED to get back on previous prescription and get off Nexium.

My doctor gave me this medicine in 2002. It was a disaster as I sat in a chair like a zombie for nearly 3 years afterward. I lost my stomach lining continually and I continue to have severe gastritis. I never had a digestive problem prior to taking it. It has destroyed my retirement and my life. PLEASE BEWARE of this DRUG!

Nexium has had a faithful user in me. But as if late I've noticed a decreased effectiveness in my use of it. The product will be available OTC soon and I wonder if the company is trying to boost its profits by skimping on quality. I've suffered with GI problems for years and if I'm not on medication I get extreme pain in the gut radiating to the back and centralized under the scapula. Laying on my left side helps immensely but does not eliminate the pain. I used Pepsid when it was prescriotion then Tagamet then Zantac, Prevacid then to Nexium. These product literally changed my life for the better and stopped these nasty symptoms plus any burning sensation, burping acid, or difficulty swallowing. The thing is this: if I switch dosage or stop taking the blockers ALL these symptoms return within a few days. As of late my Nexium has not been working like I have known it. Now I'm taking Nexium plus antacids. So maybe I should get another prescription brand? Sincerely--SmKRead More Read Less
