Been on Nexium for 6 years. Works good for reflux. Can't stop taking it or symptom's return worse than before. They say it is only an 8 to 12 week treatment. They lied. I was also diagnosed with severe vitamin B12 deficency. I was getting muscle cramps, tingling and numbness in my hands and feet. They never did a study on long term use of PPI's, but they are now warning people about the vitamin de...

After 3 years of using. I develop Osteoporosis. Bcoz it stop producing acid then calcium production is impede. Acid is important in calcium production which important for strong bones. I stop taking it instead I drink a glass of water at bedtime and each time I get acid reflux/heartburn.

29 yr old female with 15 yr history of increasingly severe GERD. I have been on Nexium for about 5 years now and do notice a significant decrease in my heartburn but not my reflux. I am taking 40 mg twice a day. I was told by my pharmacist that excessive use of Nexium will produce gastric polyps. I Went for an EGD last month and not only do I have gastritis, esophagitis but also fundic gland polyps. If Nexium is supposed to eliminate reflux damage then I should not have gastritis and esophagitis. Not impressed. Have already been told I am at maximum medical managment with medication. Nexium stops the acid, but does not stop the reflux. I still have too much fluid coming up from my gut. I also have diarrhea from the Nexium and have BMs 4-6 times a day. Cannot control when or how often I go. As a result of using PPIs (Dexilant first) I developed anal tears, and had 2 surgeries to repair. I still have pain there, most likely from scar tissue. With all these side effects, some days I am miserable.

It has been several years since I have taken Nexium regularly. I was so bad off with heartburn that all food, even the most bland, even water, gave me heartburn day and night. No other drug ( and I took many)worked for me at that time and I got back my life with the drug. Then my life situation changed for the better and stomach problems got better. I was hesitant to take Nexium daily because of health issues. I took it when needed. It is a great drug but I heard about side effects and have tried to monitor the GERD with good eating, the elimination of caffeine, chocolate, carbonated beverages, spicy food, etc. And about the time I started taking Nexium, I had a bone scan that showed I had slight osteopenia. Now for the past 3 or 4 years I have had osteoporosis of the hip. Apparently, I had developed a Vit. D deficiency and that caused me to have a calcium deficiency which in turn caused the osteoporosis. My family members for 3 generations all have had great bones-up to my generation. So I would suggest that if you need to take the drug to have a decent life, do so but take lots of Vit.D, calcium and magnesium. And do lots of walking and other weight bearing exercise. The doctor must monitor this drug carefully with blood tests. My younger brother(age 54) could not work without the medication. I am now on another medication and hope that it works as well as Nexium. I have a hiatal hernia and lung scarring so must not aspirate in the night. Read More Read Less

I was diagnosed with hiatal hernia & ulcers in my esophagus. I started nexium regimen for 90 days Right away I noticed tremendous body aches so bad it's difficult to walk. Whereas before I was feeling great physically--no pain. I have dry mouth so extreme that I don't have enough saliva in my mouth to eat anything dry--it's like I'm gagging and food doesn't taste the same. Talking is difficult too--constantly thirsty. I have frequent headaches. Somewhat disoriented at times. And blurred vision. I do not like what it is doing to me. I get all these problems to get rid of one. I suffer either way. I have been taking Nexium for several years due to Barrets. About two years ago I began having panic attacks. I found that one cause of these was due to low magnesium in my blood. Have significantly increased magnesium and attacks have dramatically reduced

I have been taking Nexium 80mg per day for 3+ years now and I have been going to different doctors for the following: nausea, severe excrutiating back/kidney pain (attacks), headache, depression, lack of sexual drive, enlarged intestines, bloating, constipation, lack of ability to hold or excrete urine, bladder spasms. GI, Urologist, etc. all puzzled by symptoms when tests are all ok. My husband took it for 1 week and noticed he couldn't pee. So I stopped this immediately and my stomach is not as enlarged, my bladder spasms are less and I have not had a painful kidney attack. It has taken me thousands of dollars in medical bills as well as time missed from work to figure out that it may very well be due to taking this medication. Not worth the side effects and only time (and more dr. visits) will tell if I have permanent damage to my intestines.Read More Read Less

Started on Nexium after Omprazole and Protonix didn't help. Nexium did the same thing the other two did, made my symptons worse instead of better. Before taking a PPI I had stomach pain and heartburn but after starting on them they made the acid reflux worse. Never felt anything in my chest or throat till taking them. I will say Nexium was the worst. Took it for 17 days and felt good for 2 of them. The last day I took it was the worst one. It just didn't work for me. I know a lot of people swear by it and I know my Mom is one of them, but the Nexium just didn't work for me.Read More Read Less

Although I was aware of the side effects, I had no idea how painful my joints would become from the magnesium deficiency caused by this drug. I was also on it with little oversight by the prescribing doctor, but was given to believe that it was safe for me to take, and better than acid in my esophagus. I'm not so sure that is true. I would rather take a simple antacid and not have side effects.

Don't know whether or not this drug would have helped me because it started making me dizzy a few days after starting it. I couldn't function, so I quit taking it. Took three months for the so-called "acid rebound" to go away. Doctor prescribed it without informing me that I was expected to take this forever. I thought he was a moron, so I've been okay without taking anything.

Ever since I started this taking this me10 days ago, my heartburn pains and swallowing difficulty have disappeared. Though, I must say, my skin on the nose and jaw are experiencing dryness. But with facial night cream, it's been better.
